Clinical Resources

The VMRC Clinical Department provides a range of services to improve quality of life for individuals served and their loved ones. Please see below for a summary of these services.

VMRC offers Behavioral Intervention Services (BIS), which trains caregivers using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) strategies. The goal is to help caregivers support their learner’s growth and participation in the community.

VMRC Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) oversee and support individuals living in Enhanced Behavioral Support Homes and Community Crisis Homes, following Title 17 rules. They also assist Service Coordinators by joining Problem Solving Team (PST) meetings and reviewing any proposed procedures that could cause pain or trauma.

VMRC offers several dental services to meet specialized needs. These include mobile dental hygiene visits at home or in residential care facilities, and a dental desensitization program called AccessibleSmiles. AccessibleSmiles is led by caregivers with support from a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and a Registered Dental Hygienist.

The Dental Coordinator can also help find a sedation dental provider that works with VMRC or accepts Medi-Cal and meets the person’s needs. Contact your Service Coordinator to learn more about these dental programs.

VMRC provides consultations and support for equipment and home changes when a need is identified during the Planning Team process. Specialists complete assessments to make sure items are medically necessary and appropriate. VMRC works with licensed therapists, equipment vendors, and contractors to get the right equipment or make needed changes.

  • Durable Medical Equipment – Provides items like manual and power wheelchairs, walkers, gait trainers, standers, and other assistive devices. Equipment is chosen based on medical need.
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) – Helps adults who need communication devices and are not served through a school program. A team, including a speech-language pathologist, helps choose the right device.
  • Vehicle Modification – Evaluations are done for individuals who are not ambulatory. Changes may include wheelchair options or vehicle adaptations to make transportation safer and easier.
  • Sensory Consultation – Occupational therapists suggest tools and activities to help individuals who are sensitive to sound, touch, or other sensory input.
  • Feeding Consultation – Support is available for individuals with very limited diets due to sensory issues. Medical concerns like chewing or swallowing problems are referred to a doctor.
  • Environmental Evaluations – Home assessments help improve safety and access. This may include bathroom changes, ramps, lifts, or other modifications to support independence.

VMRC Nurse Consultants help individuals and families with medical and health-related questions. They work closely with managed care plans and nurses who complete health care plans and assessments.

By law (WIC 4655), Nurse Consultants can give medical consent for individuals who cannot make their own decisions and do not have family support or a conservator. They also help Service Coordinators review medical records, update reports, and communicate with healthcare providers about a person’s health.

VMRC’s Telemedicine program gives individuals access to a psychiatrist when needed. It helps support individuals and caregivers when there are behavioral concerns. Appointments are held online through Zoom.

Psychological services help on eligibility, evaluations, and clinical support. Licensed Clinical Psychologists are part of a team that determines if someone qualifies for services based on state rules and best practice guidelines.

VMRC also works with outside psychologists to complete evaluations for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Intellectual Disability (ID) when needed.

Staff psychologists provide training and consultation to VMRC staff and community partners. They support Service Coordinators, including guidance on eligibility and legal issues when an individual has contact with law enforcement.

The VMRC Clinical Department aims to connect VMRC individuals, their caregivers, and providers to community resources that could improve their quality of life.

Valley Mountain Regional Center has recorded a series of Webinars via Zoom Video Conference on a variety of clinical topics. Feel free to click each webinar to view the trainings from our YouTube page.
