Self Determination Program

The Self-Determination Program (SDP) is a different way individuals can choose to receive their regional center services. It offers individuals more freedom and flexibility and requires more responsibility. In the SDP, individuals choose a Financial Management Services (FMS) vendor to help them manage their individual budget and follow the SDP rules. They use their budget funds to purchase services. Participants can hire their own workers, choose and negotiate rates with community providers, and use traditional regional center vendors. Participants continue to work with VMRC to develop their IPP and individual budget. VMRC must also certify the Individual Budget and Spending Plan.

Financial Management Service (FMS) Options

Program participants must use a vendored Financial Management Services Provider.

Local Volunteer Advisory Committee (LVAC)

The LVAC works with VMRC to improve the Self-Determination Program.

Office of the Self-Determination Program Ombudsperson

The Office helps regional center clients and families understand their rights in the SDP, including the processes to resolve issues or complaints.

State Council on Developmental Disabilities (SCDD) Orientation

The SCDD provides statewide orientations and training to all participants and families who are interested in participating in SDP.

The Self Determination Program Network

The Self Determination Program Network connects program participants with independent facilitators and other service providers.
